Youth and art: a transforming partnership
ART AND CULTURE
SÃO PAULO – SP
2022
We, as a Brazilian society, live not only the wounds of a cruel pandemic, but also the resurgence of economic and moral misery. Once again, the consequences fall most severely on children and young people, who, besides being deprived of fundamental aspects of their childhood, have few prospects for a decent future. Creating spaces where they can be unconditionally respected as children, where their freedom to discover themselves and others is guaranteed, and where the moral, historical, economic, family weight cannot impose itself, is urgent and necessary.
Paideia, from an ongoing project of over twenty years of theater for children and youth, proposes a network of actions that seeks to broaden and deepen the relationship with public schools in the region of Sto. Amaro, with the Juvenile Court through the “Casas de Acolhimento and Fundação Casa” so that, in partnership with these institutions, they can ensure that children and young people live their childhood and youth in a space where they are respected as protagonists of their stories, as creative, sensitive, intelligent and affective human beings. The theatrical action will take place both inside the institutions and at Paideia’s headquarters, in order to enhance the community perception of public space, its collective and intergenerational construction. The project aims to strengthen the cultural space for children as a territory to which they have the right to be and to transform.
It is hoped that more children and young people living in the region will know about and have access to art and culture, as alternatives to living childhood beyond school; and that the partner schools will be able to transform their practice through artistic action, fostering discovery and collective creation.
