Hunger is an issue that Brazil has faced for a long time, and although there was a period of improvement, the situation is currently very delicate. According to the report “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” (SOFI), published in June 2023 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), there has been a deterioration in hunger and food insecurity indicators in Brazil. In 2022, the report indicated that 70.3 million people were in a state of moderate food insecurity, meaning they had difficulty accessing food. The survey also pointed out that 21.1 million people in the country experienced severe food insecurity, characterized by hunger.
The Frente Alimenta is an initiative aimed at combating hunger and supporting small farmers based on relationships of trust, care, and sustainability. The project is an initiative of the Kairós Institute, a non-profit civil entity founded in 2000, which partners with various agricultural producers, three of whom hold biodynamic certification. Every week, the institution delivers agroecological fruits, vegetables, and legumes to six community kitchens located in areas of high social vulnerability in São Paulo. According to the institute’s annual report, in 2023 alone, 22,000 kilograms of food were delivered to partner kitchens, which transformed them into 109,000 meals and distributed 11,000 agroecological baskets to families facing food insecurity.
