The tragedy caused by floods and landslides in Petrópolis – RJ, on February 15, 2022, impacted the lives of the entire population of the city, with the number of fatal victims exceeding 180 people, 89 still missing and many homeless. Professionals trained to rescue the victims such as the Civil Defense and the Fire Department worked tirelessly on this front. Looking after those who survived this trauma was equally important.
The Project
Against the backdrop of public calamity, the project “Hope for Petrópolis” had sent a group of volunteers to the scene of the tragedy in order to bring the working methodology of Emergency Pedagogy to local children, adolescents, educators and teachers. In addition, it held an introductory seminar on Emergency Pedagogy and Trauma Pedagogy with support from the Municipal Secretariat of Education and helped strengthen the campaign promoted by the Center for the Defense of Human Rights – Petrópolis.
The Impact
It is hoped that people, based on the work done, will be strengthened so that they will be able to overcome their traumatic experiences.
